Muslims are a minority in Assam; they make just over 30% of the population and are discriminated against for no other reason than their faith. In order to stand a chance of survival, women must also go out to work, many of them work at the tea plantations.
The working women of Assam find themselves trapped in a generational poverty cycle, facing inadequate living and working conditions. They are forced to deal with the problems of malnutrition, limited access to clean water and insufficient healthcare and sanitation facilities.
LIA Relief Trust has been working to eradicate poverty in the Assam region since its inception in 2013. With the help of our generous donors, we strive to aid the mothers and sisters working in dire conditions, as they are being paid next to nothing. LIA Relief Trust will be hosting a High Tea event on Sunday 12th February 2023 in solidarity with the women of Assam.
